Who needs Plumbers Insurance?
Plumbing businesses come in all shapes and sizes – from sole traders focusing on domestic emergencies to subcontracted heating engineers working on large commercial sites. We can source insurance solutions for Plumbing, Heating and Associated Trades offering tailored insurance products and services specifically designed for plumbing and heating contractors.
Whatever your professional situation, we can find you insurance to fit your exact needs, combining the covers most relevant to your line of work.
What does Plumbers Insurance cover include?
The great thing about buying your Plumbers Insurance through a broker like BJP is that we can tailor your insurance package precisely to your individual requirements. For example, all plumbers are advised to take out Public Liability cover because this is a universal risk (although the level of cover may vary). By contrast, a sole trader won’t normally need Employers Liability Cover if he or she always works alone.
Bathroom fitter insurance
It may be that a substantial part of your business is in installing bathrooms – either as a subcontractor on new builds or in refurbishing existing homes. You will need bathroom fitter insurance, which would need to cover your liabilities as well as tools, equipment and vehicles.
A bathroom fitter insurance policy would potentially need to provide protection for stock in storage, too, which could be of substantial value.
At BJP we’re very conscious of your budget. Our close relationships with some of the country’s leading insurers mean we can tailor your Plumbers Insurance plan to include only the covers that you really need. That means you won’t be either underinsured or find yourself paying for unnecessary cover.

What protection do the different cover types provide to plumbers?
Plumbers Public Liability Insurance
Plumbers are particularly vulnerable to third parties – that could be passers-by or clients – making a claim against them for an accident, illness or damaged property. As well as good business sense, Plumbers Public Liability Insurance can also turn out to be necessary in some cases to secure contracts.
Plumbers Contract Works Cover
This provides protection against a multitude of risks – from storm damage to vandalism – that plumbers run while working on a site. Without insurance in place, the work would have to be re-done at the plumber’s own expense. Contract Works Cover will cover the cost of your time, as well as new fittings and materials.
Plumbers Employers Liability Cover
If you employ staff – and that includes anyone working for you even on a part-time, temporary basis, you are required by law to have Employers Liability Cover in place. This will protect you if an employee claims that your business activities have caused them an accident or illness, or damaged their property in some way.
Plumbers Tools Cover
You depend on your tools, and if they were lost, damaged or stolen, you could lose significant income or find yourself out of pocket. Tools Cover will protect you on this front, paying out for speedy repairs or replacements.
Other insurance covers you might want to consider as a plumber are:
- Van Insurance or Commercial Fleet Insurance
- Office Insurance
- Product Liability Insuranc
- Professional Indemnity
- Personal Accident Cover
- Excess Layer Policies
- Equipment Cover
- Motor Fleet
- Material Damage, including Buildings, Contents & Business Interruption
What are the different Plumbers Insurance requirements for a contracting or sub-contracting plumber?
Contracting plumbers
You need to make sure you have the right insurance to cover the work of any sub-contractors you hire, especially if they are unsupervised. In some cases subcontractors may need their own insurance. If so, you should ask to see evidence of this.
Sub-contracting plumbers
If you carry out unsupervised work as a subcontractor, you need to ensure you are fully covered by your own Plumbers Insurance. In a supervised capacity, the main contractor’s insurance should cover you while you are working on-site, but it’s always best to check with your broker.
