Are you aware of your legal obligations concerning inspections of plant and equipment you use in your work place or in the course of your business?

What needs inspection?

Inspections are required by law under the following headings:

LOLER – Lifting Operation and Lifting Equipment Regulations
Anything that lifts or lowers generally needs inspection annually. If this equipment lifts people then inspections are required every 6 months.
Items include:

  • Passenger/goods lifts
  • Forklift trucks
  • Cranes and gantries
  • Window cleaning rigs
  • Hoists
  • All lifting tackle and equipment
  • PSSR – Pressure Safety Systems Regulations

Concerns most items of plant or equipment which work under pressure. Items include:

  • Boilers and steam systems
  • Pressurised process plant and piping
  • Pressure cookers, Autoclaves etc
  • Heat exchangers and storage vessels
  • Café boilers
  • Refrigeration plant

COSHH – Control Of Substances Hazardous to Health
LEV (Local Exhaust and Ventilation) equipment must be inspected. Systems for extraction of dust, vapour or fumes must be inspected.

EAW – Electricity At Work
All fixed wiring must be checked in accordance with guidelines. The inspection period depends on the premises concerned but can be between 3 months and 10 years.

PUWER – Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations

There is no statutory obligation (except for Power Presses) for organisations to inspect items under this heading. However, items must be fit for use and relevant risk assessments completed to ensure that users are not at unnecessary risk.
Items include:

  • Roller shutter doors
  • Escalators
  • Pallet trucks
  • Ladders and steps
  • Storage/Pallet racking
  • Dumper trucks
